PreS-These attractive board books feature simple, clear concepts and delightful pencil-and-watercolor illustrations enhanced with patterned fabric swatches. Christmas demonstrates the connection between what children might see in nature and ornaments that decorate a Christmas tree such as birds, snowflakes, and stars. Hanukkah celebrates familiar aspects of the holiday such as candle lighting and playing dreidel. Menorah candles burning bright / Say happy Hanukkah every night. In this cheerful board book, brief lines and winsome pictures show the many ways that people celebrate Hanukkah, from eating delicious latkes and chocolate coins to spinning dreidels and singing. Martin's simple text has an appealing beat and rhythm that's helped along by the occasional rhymes. Sweet, who was awarded a Caldecott Honor for her illustrations in Jen Bryant's A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams (2008), targets a much younger audience here in her exuberant, fruit juice-colored collages of patterned paper and paint-washed pencil drawings. Each spread pairs an upbeat scene of multicultural children enjoying holiday activities with a large image of a menorah, and preschoolers will enjoy counting the candles that increase, one by one, until the final page.
