Author Notes
Dennis Lehane was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts on August 4, 1965. He graduated from Eckerd College and the graduate program in creative writing at Florida International University.
He has written several mystery novels including Darkness, Take My Hand; Sacred; and Shutter Island. A Drink Before the War won the 1995 Shamus Award for Best First Novel by the Private Eye Writers of America. Mystic River won the Anthony Award and the Barry Award for Best Novel, the Massachusetts Book Award in Fiction, and France's Prix Mystère de la Critique. Three of his novels, Mystic River; Gone, Baby, Gone; and Shutter Island were made into feature films. He also wrote, produced, and directed the film, Neighborhoods.
His lbook, Moonlight Mile, concerns the mystery of finding a missing 16-year-old girl in Boston. Lehane's book, World Gone By, made several 2015 Bestseller lists including The New York Times, Publisher's Weekly, and USA Today.

It's been 11 years since we've seen Boston private detectives Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro and, although they're now married with a four-year-old daughter, the years have not been kind. The couple is plagued by money troubles, depression, and regret over a decision Patrick made 12 years ago in the course of the novel Gone, Baby, Gone. Having found the kidnapped Amanda McCready, he elected to return her to her drug-addicted mother rather than leave her in the care of the considerably more benign kidnappers, a loving elderly couple. Now Amanda has gone missing again, and, to Angela's dismay, Patrick postpones a well-paying job to search for the girl. Jonathan Davis captures Angie's bitterness; the youthful, yet coldly efficient delivery of the brilliant teenage Amanda; the growl of the friendly sociopath Bubba and assorted others, including a genial, self-amused Russian mobster. But his finest achievement is his voice for Patrick, the narrator. It's world-weary, very definitely Bostonian, and conveys a strength of character that suggests the task he's set for himself may not be as impossible as it appears. In this sequel to Gone, Baby, Gone (1998), PI team Patrick McKenzie and Angie Gennaro, now married and the parents of a toddler, are contacted by Amanda McCready's grandma. Amanda was 4 when she was kidnapped, and Patrick and Angie went all out to find the child. Now Amanda is 16 and has again gone missing. Her drug-addict mother and abusive stepfather are totally uncooperative, but Patrick manages to glean some clues from Amanda's tony high-school classmates. Patrick, still haunted by the ethical dilemma he unleashed by taking Amanda from the loving family that kidnapped her only to return her to her neglectful mother, is totally invested in finding her again at the expense of an offer for a cushy but soulless job with a prestigious law firm. An older Patrick may have lost a step physically, but he is incredibly cool under pressure and still able to toss off the most cynically funny dialogue. Hardened Russian mobsters provide ample comic relief as well as plenty of mayhem in this exciting and fast-paced read. The economic recession that never seems to end for workingclass Americans is making itself felt in the crime fiction of authors whose regional roots run deep. Dennis Lehane, not the cheeriest of writers in the best of times, seems downright depressed about the way things are going in New England. In MOONLIGHT MILE (Morrow/HarperCollins, $26.99), he brings back Patrick Kenzie, the private detective from Dorchester, Mass., whose anti-establishment attitude and "class rage" fueled the violence of his earliest novels, to paint a bleak picture of nice towns coming apart at the seams. Driving around Auburn, Me., with a high school coach, Patrick gains perspective on how a former athlete might lose his mind to methamphetamines and wind up killing a woman. According to the coach, the big crack in the town's foundation is the double-digit unemployment rate. But that's just the beginning. "The stuff our fathers took for granted as long as you worked hard, the great safety net and the fair wage and the gold watch at the end of it all? That's all gone around here," he tells Patrick, who says it's gone in Boston too. "Gone all over" the coach reckons. Even Patrick, who is now married to his gunslinger partner, Angie Gennaro, and mindful of his fatherly duties to their little girl, feels the financial pinch. Angling for full-time employment, he takes on demeaning assignments for a big Boston security firm, but throws a bone, to his conscience by chasing a runaway teenager who has never forgiven him for snatching her from the loving couple who kidnapped her when she was 4 years old and returning her to her wildly neglectful mother. At 16, Amanda M cCready appears to be more intelligent, mature and well adjusted than the adults who are still fighting over her, but the ethical issues of the case weigh heavily on Patrick. After indulging his hero in a Jesuitical analysis of his moral actions, Lehane lets him cleanse his soul through unusual acts of extreme violence. After all these years, you'd think he'd have outgrown his old habits. But once the plot goes ballistic, he and Bubba, the thug with the "deranged cherub's face" who backs him up on these wild adventures, do battle with a cartoon gallery of Russian gangsters who appear to have been airlifted from a video game. Times may be bad, but you can't blame the economy for this one. Reggie Nadelson has a real feel for the sources of life in the New York neighborhoods she celebrates in her vibrant mysteries featuring Artie Cohen, a Russianborn detective who knows the city with the intimacy of a lover. Nadelson sends Artie to Harlem in BLOOD COUNT (Walker, $26), initially to feel the pulse of the district on the night Barack Obama is elected president, and later to help a friend cope with the suspicious death of an old Russian woman at the Louis Armstrong Apartments in Sugar Hill. This grand old building, perpetually besieged by opportunistic developers, is more than an attractive murder setting. It's also a stage where the elderly residents can regale Artie with wonderful accounts of legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Strayhorn. Even the stories that lack a pivotal function in the plot, like the reverential one about Paul Robeson, contribute to the broader message: that some neighborhoods can always find hope in a dream. Every game has its rules, including the deadly one that Jeffery Deaver plays in EDGE (Simon & Schuster, $26.99). The challenge is to figure out what the rules are in this brain-teaser of a thriller, which pits two ruthless professionals against each other in a murderous contest over the lives of a Washington, D.C., police detective and his family. The taciturn narrator, known only as Corte, is the designated "shepherd," secretly dispatched by the government to protect "an armed, drinking cop with a hero complex" from the "lifter" whose grim specialty is extracting information through torture. One of the key locations in Dennis Lehane's ninth novel is a warehouse in Massachusetts that sells movie memorabilia - fitting because the book itself is, in some ways, a film souvenir. Lehane has been unusually fortunate with an industry that has a habit of either ignoring or destroying the literary properties it buys. In recent years, there has been a trio of cinematic versions trailing critical praise and prize nominations: Clint Eastwood's Mystic River, Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island and Ben Affleck's Gone Baby Gone. The latter was adapted from one of a series of stories featuring the married private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro. After an 11-year gap in which he worked on one-off novels, Lehane revisits these characters in Moonlight Mile, and the resumption of the sequence makes thematic use of the interruption. Gone, Baby, Gone turned on the disappearance of a four-year-old girl, Amanda McCready, whose case gave the investigators an exquisite moral dilemma typical of this writer's fiction: should Amanda, discovered in the care of a loving but illegal couple, be returned to the custody of her abusive and neglectful natural mother? In the sequel, Amanda, now 16, goes missing for a second time. This is a different kind of disappearance, over which she might have more control, but she is still too young to vanish with impunity, and the explanation of her latest departure painfully confronts Patrick and Angie with the consequences of their earlier decision. In a classic crime device, the plot involves the solution to a riddle: "Five people walked into a room, two died, but four walked out." The Kenzie and Gennaro books are narrated by Patrick in a battered and slangy but ultimately moral tone that consciously echoes Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. But the trick of writing American private dick fiction this late in the day is to be post-Chandler without being sub-Chandler, and Lehane impressively writes within a tradition while also making it his own. The sardonic metaphors and similes nod to the noir masters of the past. Surburban houses boast "lawns that looked like they shaved twice a day". A resident of this domestic paradise "had the look of a woman who kept her plastic surgeon on speed dial", in stark contrast to a dog-walker in a rougher area who, having spurned cosmetic attention, "could have stored loose change in the pockets under her eyes". These are words you can imagine being spoken and it's no surprise that Lehane, between recent books, was a key screenwriter on the fabled TV series The Wire. But, crucially, he is also very good at filling in the social context between the smart one-liners. The period is clearly and vividly the US in the post-Lehman Brothers, mid-Obama turn of the first decade of the 21st century. One character laments the difficulty of making a living in "this recession, this depression, this whatever the fuck", while Patrick's narration notes the daily rage and confusion: "You asked a simple question lately or made an innocuous aside and suddenly you were the recipient of a howl of loss and fury." The settings, including and beyond that movie memorabilia warehouse, are economically but intensely sketched. While seeking Amanda for a second time, Patrick and Angie visit a gated community in which all the roads (Tuck Terrace, Scarlet Street) derive from the legend of Robin Hood, although the signs advising "press *958 for Security" rather miss the point of the Sherwood Forest man's attitude to the possessions of the rich. A rock arena, eerily empty between gigs, is another arresting venue. Most impressive, though, is Lehane's ability to give a sense of real lives being lived. The hardest task in fiction is to depict convincingly the passage of time. In movies and plays, we're too conscious of the tricks of wigs and make-up, while in a novel, the fact that the story can be read in a few hours can militate against the author's presentation of years and decades. In Moonlight Mile, however, the clever use of the established back-story from Gone, Baby, Gone gives real weight to the sense of characters ageing and accumulating experience, regrets and patterns of behaviour. Those who have read the earlier book or seen the film will feel this history even more keenly, but readers starting here will find some of the sharpest talk and smartest social observation in crime fiction. In this sequel toGone, Baby, Gone(1998), they are no longer partners as Boston private investigators but a married couple with a four-year-old daughter. Patrick freelances for a venerable firm that caters to the city's power elite, where he wrestles with the morality of his work but hopes for a full-time job. While Angie finishes grad school, they are all but broke. Twelve years earlier, they'd been racked by the case of a kidnapped four-year-old, Amanda McCready, when they rescued her from a couple who only wanted the best for her and returned her to her unfit mother. Now Amanda has disappeared again, and Patrick must decide whether to revisit a case that had caused his estrangement from Angie for over a year, and which now could threaten their domesticity and their daughter. As a return to earlier form for Lehane, the novel lacks the psychological depth and thematic ambition of his recent work, but its wise-cracking dialogue, page-turning (though convoluted) plot and protagonists who are all the more likable for their flaws extend the addictive spirit of the series. "When your daughter asks what you stand for, don't you want to be able to answer her?" Angie challenges her husband. To do so, he becomes enmeshed with the Russian Mob, shifting allegiances and a wise-beyond-her-years, 16-year-old Amanda, who rubs his nose in the aftereffects of his earlier involvement with her. Narrator Jonathan Davis affects a pseudo-Bostonian accent when speaking as Patrick; his Russian accent and humorous portrayal of the Russian characters make for an enjoyable listen. Recommended for crime novel enthusiasts and fans of the series.
