Walter Dean Myers was born on August 12, 1937 in Martinsberg, West Virginia. When he was three years old, his mother died and his father sent him to live with Herbert and Florence Dean in Harlem, New York. He began writing stories while in his teens. He dropped out of high school and enlisted in the Army at the age of 17. After completing his army service, he took a construction job and continued to write.
He entered and won a 1969 contest sponsored by the Council on Interracial Books for Children, which led to the publication of his first book, Where Does the Day Go? During his lifetime, he wrote more than 100 fiction and nonfiction books for children and young adults. His works include Fallen Angels, Bad Boy, Darius and Twig, Scorpions, Lockdown, Sunrise Over Fallujah, Invasion, Juba!, and On a Clear Day. He also collaborated with his son Christopher, an artist, on a number of picture books for young readers including We Are America: A Tribute from the Heart and Harlem, which received a Caldecott Honor Award, as well as the teen novel Autobiography of My Dead Brother.
He was the winner of the first-ever Michael L. Printz Award for Monster, the first recipient of the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement, and a recipient of the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults. He also won the Coretta Scott King Award for African American authors five times. He died on July 1, 2014, following a brief illness, at the age of 76.

The father-and-son team behind blues journey creates a scintillating paean to jazz. Walter Dean Myers infuses his lines (and the rests between them) with so much savvy syncopation that readers can't help but be swept up in the rhythms. "Stride," for example, narrated by a piano man, captures the spirit of a "band on fire." On a delphinium-purple page, below each line of white type ("I got jump in my feet, and I'm turning up the heat, left hand hauling"), two significant words from that line dance in black script ("jump"/ "feet"), functioning like the chords a jazz pianist uses as percussive punctuation within a tune. Visually, the page's typography evokes long white and short black piano keys. Christopher Myers lays black-inked acetate over brilliant, saturated acrylics. The resulting chiaroscuro conjures the deep shadows and lurid reflections of low-lit after-dark jazz clubs. The artist dynamically enlarges key compositional elements: a massive bass, a long ago drummer's muscular back, and fingers-poised over keys, plucking strings, splayed along a flute. Design sings here, too: Louis Armstrong's spread upends, befitting that jazz giant. (Intermediate) With its ""strings crying like midnight widows / Horns tearing down Jericho walls,"" jazz prompts Myers pere et fils to an ear- and eye-opening companion to blues journey (rev. 5/03). After a succinct prose introduction by Walter Dean Myers, both writer and illustrator cut loose for an extended jam session, as historical moments, great jazz musicians, and the various forms and instruments of the genre each take a turn on the stage. The poems move easily from swing (""Oh, Miss Kitty, / she's as round as she is tall"") to be-bop (""A bippety-bop snake / can't bite my style / But a bippety-bop chick / can stay awhile"") to cool (""What can I add with my horn? / Is it a new sound born because we are / Together?""). In his black ink and acrylic paintings Christopher Myers both follows his father's lead and suggests rhythms and moods of his own, placing intense gestural portraits of musicians lost in their music against expressionist backgrounds of deep indigos, cool cherry reds, and inky blue-greens. As with blues journey, readers will find music coming irresistibly into their heads. An appendix of jazz terms is included. (c) Copyright 2010. There have been numerous picture books about jazz and jazz history over the last decade, and by and large, the illustrators have fared better than the writers at capturing the spirit of the music in a way that relates to the young. Those attempting to describe the music in verse have encountered particularly rough sledding, many forced either to rely on wild abstraction (Raschka) or to craft poems so complex they exclude all but the most sophisticated young readers (Wynton Marsalis in his recent Jazz A B Z). Now, finally, the father-son Myers team has put together an absolutely airtight melding of words and pictures that is perfectly accessible to a younger audience. The poems parallel significant stages in the development of jazz, but the historical connection is only tangential; the draw of the poems, as with the music, is rhythm, and Myers captures the rolling cadences of early New Orleans jazz (Well, good-bye to old Bob Johnson / We'll haul his body slow / There's a white horse a-striding / A sad deacon riding / Six men to lay him low ) as well as the staccato sounds of be-bop and beyond (A shaved reed tongue is crying / In the blood dark studio / Drums add bark and grumble / As a trumpet blares something rude ). And, best of all, Christopher Myers' pictures make those rhythms visual, the curving lines of his figures seeming to move off the page, swinging to the beat. New York Review of Books Review
THERE was a time when jazz books for children needed only three things to get into the stores: scat, bebop and cats. Now they're venturing far beyond - into biography and the roots of jazz. The change in depth was probably inevitable. The great "Charlie Parker Played Be Bop" (1992), by Chris Raschka, captures the rhythm of a bop blues but takes only a minute to read. Rachel Isadora's "Ben's Trumpet" (1979), a beautiful story about a boy with an imaginary horn, conjures up urban life, but tells you little about the music. Still, some of the new jazz books give me pause. And when I say give me pause, I mean I skip whole passages and pages when I read them to kids. I'm just not up to explaining to a child why Dizzy Gillespie's dad beat him. Or just what might be happening when "I feel the midnight passion humming." To me, it's not the same as explaining "Everyone Poops." It can wait. A lot of great jazz musicians - Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, to name a few - had tough lives or at least tough childhoods, which probably had a big effect on their music. People should learn that. But how young should those people be? "Dizzy" is a biography for children 4 to 8, written by Jonah Winter. The illustrations, by Sean Qualls, look a bit like Ezra Jack Keats's pictures worked over by Ben Shahn. They're beautifully evocative of the 1930s jazz scene. But the story is painful. This is partly because of Dizzy's childhood. "You see, his dad was always beating on him and there was nothing he could do but try to be tough and try not to cry." But it's also painful because of the message the author takes from Dizzy's life: "Jazz was like breaking the rules ... like getting in trouble - it was FUN!" What made Dizzy great, suggests "Dizzy," was being a clown, shooting spitballs and elbowing others off the stage. Illustrations from "Jazz," top, and "This Jazz Man." Never mind Dizzy's hard work or his intense collaboration with Charlie Parker. The music's all about goofing around and getting noticed. All mention of Dizzy's sober virtues and virtuosity is relegated to a note at the back of the book, which also notes that he trained a lot of young musicians, "never used drugs and he was married to the same woman (Lorraine) his whole life." How uncool. "This Jazz Man," by Karen Ehrhardt, with pictures by R.G. Roth, is gentle and upbeat. Here the idea is that every great musician joins one big imaginary jazz band, and it's a whole lot of fun. To the rhythm (and, if you're inclined, to the tune) of "This Old Man," the book introduces nine figures from jazz history, including Louis Armstrong singing, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson tap-dancing, Art Blakey drumming and Duke Ellington conducting. When you reach 10, they all jam together. The pictures are festive collages in the hip manner of 1950s jazz album covers. In the back of the book are clear musical histories of each figure. My only qualm is with the third word of the title, which pushes out Ella, Sarah and Billie. (C'mon, jazz is one of the few fields where a large proportion of the legends are women.) But once you've committed yourself to the song "This Old Man," there's really no going back. "This Jazz Babe" just doesn't cut it. Speaking of jazz babes, you should get a load of the long-limbed, languorous, lovelorn women in "Jazz," a book of jazz-inspired poems for all ages written by Walter Dean Myers and illustrated with slithery, moody, neo-expressionist pictures by his son Christopher Myers. It has recently won a few awards, including a Coretta Scott King Honor for Illustration. But was it really written with kids in mind? The story of jazz, this book suggests, is all about sensual love. In Africa: "Along the Nile / A black man's drum / Speaks / Love." Billie Holiday: "I love you oh so much / and I tremble when you touch my hand. / Can you understand?" IT'S true that blues, the music at the root of jazz, is largely about love, lust and love lost. Gr 4-9-Walter Dean Myers's fabulous book (Holiday House, 2006) is even better in this audio version. Winner of the 2008 Odyssey Award for excellence in children's audiobook production, it opens with an extensive introduction to the history of jazz, and then explodes into Christopher Meyers's lively acrylic-and-black-ink paintings of musicians on vividly colored pages. The poetry and art come alive with the beat and sass of jazz, as different styles and performers are showcased. James "D-Train" Williams and Vaneese Thomas give voice to the text with a celebration of music, poetry, and song. Rob Mathes has composed original music for each poem, which is performed by a live jazz ensemble. Williams and Thomas perform in perfect syncopation, molding each poem to the music, playing with and off each other's voices. For example, "Stride" is a poem in which two words from each long, rhyming line are repeated in contrasting colors; the poem is performed by Williams, with Thomas joining him to add the featured words as he speaks them, creating an exciting emphasis and rhythm. From a New Orleans funeral celebration to be-bop and bluesy torch songs, they perform each piece with a distinctive jazz flavor, without allowing the music to overshadow the poetry. They also take turns reading the introduction, glossary, and timeline, so that the CD becomes a complete performance of the book that can stand on its own. A cycle of 15 poems and vivid, expressive paintings celebrate that most American genre of music: jazz. Myers p're presents readers with poems that sing like their subject, the drumming of African rhythms leading into a celebration of Louis Armstrong, an evocation of stride piano, a recreation of a New Orleans jazz funeral and a three-part improvisation among bass, piano and horn. A script-like display type appears sparingly, guiding readers to the sound of jazz embedded in the poems' syncopated rhythms. Myers fils uses bold colors and lines straight from the muralists of the '30s to create his illustrations, dramatic foreshortening and exaggerated angles a visual complement to the pulsing sounds being celebrated. It's a very different look and treatment from that given to their earlier blues journey (2003), although equally successful at giving readers a visceral sense of its musical subject. A lengthy introduction, glossary and timeline give background to the whole. This offering stands as a welcome addition to the literature of jazz: In a genre all too often done poorly for children, it stands out as one of the few excellent treatments.
