Horn Book Review
This series discusses how archaeologists' work helps us learn about ancient cultures. Each volume highlights major sites and finds; the text touches on the impact of modern history on priceless artifacts and discusses controversies. Sidebars and well-captioned photos expand on the information, as does an interview with a working archaeologist. Reading list, timeline, websites. Bib., glos., ind. Booklist Review
From the National Geographic Investigates series, this attractive book introduces early Maya culture through archaeological research. Opening features include a time line of Mesoamerican history, brief discussions of major periods, and a clear map showing Maya civilization during those periods and the locations of major archaeological sites. The chapters that follow consider questions about Maya life from ancient times to the present. A lively two-page interview with an archaeologist offers an intriguing look at a career many children find fascinating. Numerous excellent color photos illustrate the text, along with a few drawings and paintings, too.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2008 Booklist
