Surveys the portrait miniatures that comprise the collection of Richard and Gloria Manney. Almost every noted American miniaturist who painted between 1750 and 1850 is represented. Each miniature is catalogued with a physical description, an illustration at actual size, and a discussion that whenever possible includes information about the subject of the portrait. One their third of the miniatures are also illustrated in color. A full bibliography is given for every known miniaturist represented in the collection. Intended to showcase items not on permanent display, this volume chronicles the evolution of the design collection at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Design, also known as applied, industrial or decorative art, is defined here as work conceived by a designer and manufactured in a limited edition. Miller, curator of modern design at the Denver Art Museum, provides an informative, if dry, introductory text emphasizing key curatorial figures and important exhibitions in the Metropolitan's history. Significant art movements of the past 100 years are represented by examples of glass, ceramics, metalwork, lighting, textiles, costume, architectural and decorative drawings and furniture forms; more than half of the 360 illustrations of some 125 masterworks are in color. A selection of objects from the twentieth-century design collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this volume covers examples of applied and decorative arts drawn from the museum's various departments. Miller's historical introductions to each section chart developments from art nouveau to postmodernism, but most of the text concentrates on the museum's continuing commitment to preserving a record of twentieth-century architecture and design and on the story of how its design collection evolved. Although many of the museum's items are not on display, this book helps remedy that situation with a number of large colorplates--with identifications but no commentary--and with smaller black-and-white photographs that illustrate Miller's brief descriptions and definitions of various styles and periods. Ceramics, furniture, and textiles figure prominently, but architectural drawings and clothes also expand the boundaries of both art and design. ~--John Brosnahan

For more than a century the Metropolitan Museum (New York City) has been committed to collecting modern design, and this book shows the international scope and the richness of that collection. More than 125 masterworks from the museum's exceptional collection are examined. Each of the 13 sections is introduced by an informative essay about the styles depicted in the outstanding examples that follow; glass, ceramics, metalwork, lighting, textiles, costume, architectural and design drawings, and furniture are covered. The first part documents the museum's involvement in modern design from the late 19th century to the present in terms of collections, exhibitions, educational programs, and philosophical approaches. The second part presents a handsome pictorial portfolio of the museum's holdings, broken into three chronological divisions: 1890-1920, 1920-1945, and 1945-1990. There are 360 illustrations, the majority in full color and full-page size. Miller (now curator of modern design, Denver Art Museum) took over in 1983 the responsibility for the Metropolitan Museum's Department of American Decorative Arts' 20th-century design holdings. He contributed to Design in America: The Cranbrook Vision, 1925-1950 (CH, Jul'84). His wonderful essay, "Perceptions of Design," explains the parameters for judging numerous pieces from different cultures. There is an easy-to-use section of notes and an appendix of exhibitions at the Metropolitan. Highly recommended for design and art-history reference. -V. M.
