Now in its fourth edition (the third was published in 2005), Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World Dictionary is the premier source of information on worldwide observances. The new edition contains more than 3,000 (up from nearly 2,500) events from the U.S and more than 100 other nations. In addition to new entries, updates include revised contact information and websites and updated appendixes. There are three new appendixes: Phases of the Moon from 2009 to 2010 Given in Eastern Standard Time, Overview of the World's Major Religions, and Facts about Countries around the World. The dictionary is arranged alphabetically by the name of the celebration and ranges from Aban Parab, at entry number 0001, to the Zydeco Music Festival, at number 3072. Entries include the name of the celebration, time period, a brief description, contact information, and sources consulted. There are three separate indexes chronological, subject, and general. The chronological index has two parts, Fixed Days and Events and Moveable Days, which lists entries observed according to the non-Gregorian calendar. The Special Subject Index is arranged in six categories Ancient/Pagan, Calendar, Folkloric, Historic, Promotional, and Sporting. Finally, the general index is arranged alphabetically by keyword and includes proper names. Extensive introductory pages describe the scope and audience of the book, with detailed instructions for its use. Now in its fourth edition (3rd ed., 2005; 2nd ed., CH, Mar'98, 35-3622, ed. by H. Henderson and S. E. Thompson; 1st ed., CH, Feb'95, ed. by Thompson and B. W. Carlson), this dictionary, which in part consolidates information from many standard sources, has become a standard reference itself. The entries (about 500 are new) are arranged alphabetically and describe secular and religious observances, ancient and modern. Each entry contains source and/or contact information. The sources are 111 reference works, including such titles as the 19th-century The Book of Days, ed. by Robert Chambers (reprinted, 1990); The Encyclopedia of Religion, ed. by Mircea Eliade (CH, Jun'88); and the fourth edition of Holiday Symbols and Customs (2009), edited by Helene Henderson (3rd ed., ed. by S. E. Thompson, CH, Jan'04, 41-2516). A key to the abbreviations used for the sources is provided on the inside covers, and full bibliographic information is included in the useful annotated bibliography. A very good general index is supplemented by two chronological indexes (for fixed and movable days) and six subject indexes ("Ancient/Pagan," "Calendar," "Folkloric," "Historic," "Promotional," "Sporting"). Three new appendixes provide information on the phases of the moon (2009-20), an overview of major religions, and facts about countries. Other appendixes cover calendars, facts about US states and presidents, tourism information, and legal holidays by state and country.
