PreS-K-This picture book begins in a small way, in a kitchen, as a mouse taps a cup with a spoon. Turn the page and readers see the mouse hand the spoon to a cat. From there, more and more animals join in and soon a marching band forms and moves outside. The rhythmic text depicts the action in a minimalist style: "A box, a bowl,/A spoon, a stick./Tap! Tap! Clickety-click!" Dynamic watercolors use fluid lines and soft, clear colors to show a large group of animals celebrating sound and motion. This book seems a natural fit for toddler programs and may inspire some families at home as well. Gene Baer's Thump, Thump, Rat-a-Tat-Tat (HarperCollins, 1991) is similar, but Lois Ehlert's illustrations for that book have a very different visual style. "Ting!" a kitchen mouse discovers that striking a teacup with a spoon makes the most marvelous sound. Soon, a bevy of farm animals are raiding the cupboards to create their own homemade instruments ("A box, a bowl/ A spoon, a stick./ Tap! Tap!/ Clickety-click!"), and the ensemble is off and strutting: "BOOM BAH! Here we go!" A bona fide band with spiffy uniforms and real instruments (but still staffed by animals) suddenly appears; the amateurs, far from being, um, cowed, join in the parade and seem to beckon readers to come along. There's no real story-it's basically a flash mob assembled by sound rather than cellphones-and first-time author Cummings's simple, exclamatory rhymes are like blasts from a trumpet. The infectious joy of spontaneous music making comes through loud and clear, thanks to newcomer Rycroft's effervescent watercolor and pencil drawings. Composing all her images along the same stagelike plane, Rycroft creates a sense of a genuine happening, driven by giddy energy and unstoppable momentum. "Ting!" That's the sound of one musical mouse with a spoon and cup. It's also the beginning of an impromptu parade featuring high-spirited farm animals and their kitchen instruments. A cat, a pig, a hen, some chicks, and a goat help themselves to pot lids, a tin can, a spatula, and other kitchen accoutrements to join the tiny band leader in a noisy procession. Rycroft's large, clean pencil and watercolor illustrations are as exuberant as Cummings's bouncy rhyming text, which with its quick tempo keeps the pace lively and the volume up. The amateur marchers stop short in their tracks when a ("very loud") marching band appears on the scene, but they're quiet only for a downbeat. Then it's "Hey ho! Clap your hands! / Hey ho! Join the band!" Soon the whole barnyard is booming, bahing, and tra-la-la-ing. Grab a cup, a bowl, a stick, whatever you can find, and join the fun. From HORN BOOK, (c) Copyright 2010. Farm animals build a percussion band one "Ting!" at a time. It starts when a mouse taps a spoon against a cup. The sound attracts a cat, who doesn't chase the mouse but rather wants to play too. The mouse calls a rooster, a pig and a donkey. Before long, they are all marching with articles borrowed from the kitchen. A quartet of fluffy chicks adds tinkly bells attached to flower stems. This attracts flying birds, who carry a festive string of colorful pennants. Along comes another band (of sheep and horses and bulls and a dog) in bright red-and-gold band jackets. What else can the makeshift farm band do but...join the parade! "Tah-dah!" Cummings's minimal text moves along in clipped phrases, punctuated by onomatopoeic effects, creating a splendid read-aloud chant. Rycroft's buoyant watercolors, arranged gracefully against expansive white space, add zest. Even the youngest readers should be able to handle the simple text and catch the rhythm (though lapses of logic might bother older children). Hide the silverware! The action begins in the kitchen, where a little white mouse hits a cup with a spoon: Ting! Inspired, the cat bangs a spoon on a can's lid: Tong! Barnyard animals grab other kitchen equipment and continue the fun outdoors, where they join a troup of approaching animals wearing snazzy band uniforms. Together they play, marching on their hind legs in a joyful, musical parade. The rhythmic, rhyming text and the exuberant drawings of strutting animals create a sense of music that builds in a great crescendo. The short phrases of text and the comical figures of the prancing animals will hold young children until the exultant Tah-dah! on the last page. In Rycroft's spirited pencil-and-watercolor illustrations, the animals cavort with energy, personality, and joy.
