Ian and Andi Copeland, the protagonists of this gripping psychological thriller from the pseudonymous Keir (The Swing of Things), have been sweethearts since they met at Glenlake Academy, a prep school north of Chicago. The successful couple, who lead an idyllic life in St. Louis, have three children: Cassidy, a senior at Glenlake, and younger twins, who also expect to go to Glenlake, attendance there having been a family tradition since Ian's great-great-grandfather gifted the Copeland Academic Center. While Ian and Andi were at Glenlake, Dallas Walker, a recently hired poet-in-residence, disappeared. Twenty-two years later, Dallas's remains are found in his car submerged in a nearby lake. The current writer-in-residence, a journalist whose course Cassidy is taking, supports the class's decision to investigate Dallas's death. The ensuing inquiry begins to reveal problems in Ian and Andi's marriage, exposing secrets long kept from each other. This second effort from a Chicago-area writing duo (following The Swing of Things, 2018) delivers another well-crafted, page-turning suspense tale. The discovery of a car holding the remains of a teacher who disappeared 20 years earlier exposes the dark side of an Illinois prep school. Ian and Andi Copeland were high-school sweethearts who broke up briefly during their senior year, after Andi became involved with Dallas Walker, the teacher who vanished. The Copelands' daughter, Cassidy, is now a senior at the same prep school, Glenlake, and her journalism class is exploring the teacher's case as a project. A groundskeeper has been arrested for the teacher's murder, but Cassidy strives to prove his innocence. The story moves from the present day to Ian and Andi's time at school, seen through excerpts from their journals. The clever juxtaposition of the couple's relationship then and now adds satisfying depth to the mystery. While students being seduced by teachers has become a familiar fabric of contemporary life, the authors add a wealth of twists and turns to their telling, generating multiple surprises. This follow-up to The Swing of Things by Keir (coauthors Linda Joffe Hull and Keir Graff) is the story of a highly revered and envied family, the Copelands. Ian and Andi met decades ago at Glenlake Academy. Now their daughter, Cassidy, is a senior at the same school. As previous generations of Copelands have made Glenlake part of their history, Glenlake, too, has enjoyed the financial generosity and support of the Copelands. However, when a new writer-in-residence decides to utilize his talent as an investigative journalist in a class that Cassidy is taking, the carefully crafted life the Copelands have created is challenged. With the recent discovery of a submerged car containing the remains of a previous writer-in-residence from 20 years ago, when Ian and Andi were seniors themselves, the past secrets, hurts, and stories they have told all come to the surface as well.
