The Pennsylvania Ballet, one of America's premier dance companies, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013. This PBS documentary, locally produced by Philadelphia's PBS station, presents highlights from three works, designed to show off the ballet's contemporary and classical roots. Christopher Wheeldon's After the Rain comes first, followed by Under the Sun, choreographed by Margo Sappington. Sun is meant to recall the mobile sculptures of famed artist Alexander Calder, which is particularly appropriate as Calder's family and works are well represented in Philadelphia's many museums. Finally, "Diamonds" from Jewels, choreographed by the great early supporter of the company George Balanchine, pays tribute to the maestro's Russian background, demonstrating his skill with moving ensembles around the stage. The dancers perform against a simple background, in mostly unadorned costumes, drawing the viewer's attention to the dance itself. Extras include interviews with Sappington and others.
