Summary:
Noted photo historian Lesy tries to comprehend a man who left a strange archive of 60,000 images to the Library of Congress. His name was Angelo Rizzuto, but he called himself Angel. He lived in a single, run-down room in a crummy hotel. Every day he left at 2:00 P.M. to photograph New York City obsessively, from above and on the streets. We see grand cityscapes, compassionate photographs of children, and confrontational pictures of angry women. He also took an anguished self-portrait almost every day. What is not obvious is why--what did it all mean? The mroe Lesy investigates, the more tantalizing details emerge. Lesy has fashioned a psychoanalytic dissection of a tortured soul in an account that is both deeply unsettling and satisfying.--From publisher description.
