In 1932, Charlie Lindbergh, the 20-month-old son of transatlantic flight hero Charles Lindbergh and author Anne Morrow Lindbergh, was kidnapped and killed. Bruno Richard Hauptman was arrested and ultimately executed for what came to be known as the Crime of the Century. This documentary takes a renewed look at the events and principals with the help of experts in profiling, handwriting, and archival documents who apply contemporary techniques to the case. Using both original film footage and reenactments, the production features experts, authors of books on the crime, amateur sleuths, and others with a connection to the events reviewing the known facts. Whether Hauptman acted alone is explored, and a number of theories identifying possible accessories are advanced, including a chilling suggestion that Charles Lindbergh himself may have been involved. There is some grisly, if brief, film of the baby's body, which may be difficult for some viewers, but generally the production is solid; the blend of original and appropriately shadowy re-enacted footage works well. -VERDICT The use of modern forensic and behavioral sciences to reexamine this familiar case raises interesting new questions.
