Booklist Review

The complete in the title of this compendium is no misnomer. This is a comprehensive overview of manga, the genre of graphic literature sometimes referred to as Japanese comic books. Thompson, a longtime manga advocate and enthusiast, provides extensive background information, definitions, time lines, and in-depth explanations of numerous types and subgenres, themes and characters, formats, and audiences. Most importantly, he has compiled reviews of every manga series ever translated and released in the U.S. The 900-plus reviews, written by Thompson and more than 20 other contributors, are uniformly detailed, witty, and authoritative. Each review includes complete bibliographic information and publishing history; the current number of released volumes; subject headings; suggested age recommendations (all ages, 13+, 16+, 18+, adult); descriptive summaries; and a 0- to 4-star rating. Reviews are sorted into 38 sections that distinguish genres ( Mystery, Romance and Love Comedy ); themes ( Magical Girls, Phantom Thieves ); and audiences: Josei (women), Seinen (men), Shojo (girls), and Shonen (boys). Each chapter has an introductory essay explaining the characteristics and development of the subgroup. Selections are limited to authentic manga and do not address anime spin-offs, Korean or Chinese publications, material first published in English or another language, scanlations, or other unlicensed formats. An afterword considers the future of manga publishing (continuing growth, e-book and electronic versions, etc.). Additional features include appendixes on Japanese attitudes toward depictions of sex, violence, and racial stereotyping; a brief summary of Japanese language and characters; a glossary of both English and Japanese terms; a bibliography; and an index of artists. This resource will be welcomed both as a collection development tool and as an accessible and thorough introduction to manga. The amount of Japanese manga available in English has become truly staggering, and this excellent comprehensive encyclopedia fills a major need. It contains entries for over 1000 series and stand-alone manga volumes translated into English, including suspended and out-of-print publications, bilingual manga published in Japan, and American periodical comics series never collected in book form. (Manga-influenced works from the United States, Korea, and elsewhere are not featured.) Each entry encompasses basic citation information, an age rating, a one-paragraph review, and a quality ranking from zero to four stars. Many reviews are by former Viz editor Thompson; two dozen other reviewers also contribute. Yaoi and explicit adult manga are segregated into separate sections after the main alphabetical listings. Thirty-eight thematic entries cover such genres and topics as science fiction, mystery, magical girls, dojinshi, and transgender stories, often noting untranslated classics but including extensive lists of English examples. A glossary, bibliography, artist index, and good introductory material round out the volume. An extensive sample reveals only a few minor instances of incomplete information. Any fan will disagree with some of the star rankings, but this volume-highly useful for reference, readers' advisory, and collection development-is strongly recommended for all libraries.-S.R.
