Near the start of Camilleri's exquisite 14th mystery featuring Insp. Salvo Montalbano (after 2011's The Potter's Field), the self-deprecating, passionately foul-mouthed Sicilian policeman befriends a young woman, Vanna Digiulio, while both are stranded in a traffic jam during a storm that's washed out the coast road. Vanna's claim to have been on her way to Vigata to meet her aunt's yacht, the Vanna, strikes the inspector as suspicious. When the yacht docks with the disfigured body of a man that the Vanna picked up from a dinghy adrift near the harbor mouth, Montalban informs the boat's owner, an imperious signora, that she must remain in port while he investigates the man's murder. His proposal that she stay with her niece elicits the reply, "What niece?" The awkward humanity and everyday sadness of Camilleri's characters make them instantly sympathetic, while wry commentary on language, food, and local customs lend color. Booklist Review
The fourteenth entry in Camilleri's series starring the irrepressible Sicilian police inspector, Salvo Montalbano, careens through its helter-skelter plot like a pinball making its tortured way from bumper to bumper. Montalbano meets a mousy woman who piques his interest in a yacht at anchor in the bay; a body is found in a dinghy; another body turns up; Montalbano falls hard for the beautiful harbormaster; diamond smuggling enters the picture; Montalbano's nemesis, the commissioner, gets feisty all these plot elements churn away as reader and sleuth struggle to make sense of it all. Finally, for Salvo's sake and ours, the mousy woman, mousy no longer, drops out of the sky to explain what's going on. Throw in a wildly melodramatic, three-hankie finale that seems to belong in another book entirely, and you have the oddest entry in the series by far. Frankly, it isn't a particularly good mystery, but the always charismatic Montalbano makes up for most of the chaos, though even he seems a bit too Buster Keatonish this time.--Ott, Bill Copyright 2010 Booklist

It's almost summer, so let's blow this town and go to the beach - always a popular setting for murder. Inspector Salvo Montalbano, the life force of Andrea Camilleri's droll police procedurals set on the southern coast of Sicily, lives so close to the sea that a bad storm can send waves under his front porch and a really bad storm can wash out the road into town. When that happens in THE AGE OF DOUBT (Penguin, paper, $15), the chivalrous detective comes to the rescue of a young woman who has driven in from Palermo to meet her aunt's yacht, the Vanna. But when the Vanna makes harbor, she's towing a dinghy with a body in it, and when Montalbano questions the imperious grande dame who owns the yacht (in the breezy idiom of the translator, Stephen Sartarelli), he discovers that she doesn't have a niece. Camilleri has his fun with the rich visitors who sail their huge pleasure craft into local waters but won't dirty their Top-Siders by treading on local soil. But the more subtle and sustained humor in this series has to do with the sardonic attitude the Sicilians take toward strangers who view them as happy peasants, incapable of understanding their more worldly (and often criminal) pursuits. While Montalbano is smarter than the jaded villains give him credit for, he's easily distracted by a fine meal, a beautiful woman, an interesting dream - or just the sight of the sea. One way for a fugitive to hide in plain sight is to work at low-wage jobs, which is what Helen Hawthorne has been doing in Elaine Viets's quick-witted mysteries. The story of why this nice lady is on the lam is a book in itself, but after all the grunt work she catches a break in FINAL SAIL (Obsidlan, $23.95) by landing a job on a luxury yacht cruising out of Fort Lauderdale. Helen can "almost taste the sea air - and the adventure" when she joins the crew of the Belted Earl, even though her big adventure will involve exposing a smuggler. Readers intent on following the plot won't be surprised when one party disappears and another party claims to have seen the first party jumping ship for a Miami-based charter boat. Smells a bit fishy, that There's a stronger whiff of realism in the scenes of daily life aboard the yacht, which is run along the lines of a Victorian household, with the gentry taking their leisure on deck and the crew scuttling around out of sight. It's enough to make Helen long for the good old days when she was a motel maid. One person's vacation spot is another person's home. That's made clear in TARGET: TINOS (Poltoned Pen, $24. 9S), another of Jeffrey Siger's thoughtful police procedurals set in picturesque but not untroubled Greek locales. The gruesome discovery of two charred bodies, wrapped in the remnants of a Greek flag, brings Siger's bullheaded detective. Chief Inspector Andreas Kaldis of the Special Crimes Division, to the Aegean island of Tinos, a "Christian oasis" since the time of the Ottoman Empire and the site of a historic religious shrine. When it's revealed that the victims belonged to a Gypsy clan, Inspector Kaldis's boss quickly orders a cover-up, fearing that an "immigrant issue" will be made of this apparent hate crime because "our adversaries would love to switch the focus of the debate from our country's financial problems to our national character." Although Inspector Kaldis ignores orders and storms off to do the right thing, the "immigrant issue" figures very much in his investigation, just as it has throughout Greece's history. Chris Grabenstein's clever Jersey Shore mysteries are named for amusement park rides and games of chance, so it was only a matter of time before FUN HOUSE (Pegasus $25}} made the cut. Danny Boyle, the smart-aleck young cop who narrates these books, actually takes his new girlfriend to an old-fashioned Fun House on the boardwalk. But to his neighbors in Sea Haven, that's the name of a new reality show being filmed in their resort town. In this 14th installment (after The Potter's Field) of the internationally popular series set in Vigata, Sicily, Inspector Montalbano once again wrangles with local politics, mysterious strangers, and the ever-present dilemma of what to have for dinner. This time, two yachts, docked in Vigata's port, bring a flirty heiress, undercover operatives, and a whole cast of shady characters to town. An unidentified body found floating in a dinghy complicates the plot. Montalbano is further distracted by the charms of Lieutenant Bella-donna of the Harbor Office, whose attentions cause trouble between Montalbano and Livia, his out-of-town girlfriend. VERDICT- As with Camilleri's other Montalbano novels-, familiar personalities and settings don't fail to delight. The inspector and his colorful crew remain quirky and unpredictable, and the mysteries continue to entertain.
