School Library Journal Review
PreS-A child, a mother, and their dog spend a day at the beach observing wildlife and engaging in shore activities that climax with a walk to the snack shack for ice cream before heading back home for the night. The book follows the trip with a count of sights from 1 rented "flapping, snapping" beach umbrella to 10 "peeping, sleeping" plovers in the grass. The rhyming text provides both the written number and numeral imposed behind it. For example, on a tableau of the characters building nine sand castles, a large number 9 is set behind the following: "We build towers in the sunshine./sloppy,/gloppy./We make NINE." While the pencil and watercolor illustrations capture a sense of movement and convey a pleasant day, they sometimes suffer from odd perspectives and font colors that occasionally blend in with the background. In light of the abundance of counting books, this one is a nonessential choice.-Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ (c) Copyright 2013. Publisher's Weekly Review
A child, mother, and their dog, Max, enjoy a lighthearted outing at the beach. Their activities are described in rhymes that count from one to 10: "Jellyfish float in the sea... swishy, squishy./ We find three./ Big waves tumble onto shore.../ crashing, splashing./ We chase four." Mitchell combines active full-bleed spreads (a dock is crowded with fishermen, the child and mother sneak up on a flock of 10 plovers) with more intimate scenes of the child splashing in the waves or taking an ice cream break. The paperback format is just right to slip inside a beach bag for a day at the shore. Ages 3-6. (Mar.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
Kirkus Review
At the beach, a counting book, some rhyme, and perhaps some questionable visions. A curly-haired child, possibly a boy, and his mother ride on their bikes from their little cottage to the beach not far away, accompanied by Max, the dog. (No helmets.) "Striped umbrellas in the sun / flapping, snapping. / We rent ONE," with a big numeral "1" as well as the word. They go on to TWO towels, then THREE jellyfish, SIX surfers and TEN plovers in the beach grass. An unnumbered coda describes the denouement: the snack-shack, watching the sunset and back to the pretty cottage. The pictures are bright and colorful and lively of line, but some of them are a little odd. Mom, kid and dog seem to be in the water fully clothed and quite near the three jellyfish, and one would really not want to be so close to their stinging tentacles. The surfers (including a dog) are nicely multiethnic, but the waves and surfers are impossibly close to shore. The large numerals are often nearly the same color as the background (the blue 8 blends into the sky, the yellow 9 into the sand). This is not the counting book you were looking for, despite its sunny, salty tone. (Picture book. 4-7)]] Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
