In this solid series launch from Healey, best known for his Far from Home SF series, Det. Jane Harper, of Hope's Peak, N.C., and her police colleagues struggle to find and stop the man who has raped and killed two young women. A witness says he was wearing a white bag over his head evocative of the KKK. Harper's boss, Captain Morelli, gives Harper an old file of a similar case investigated by now retired detective Lloyd Claymore. Claymore tells Harper that there were many more such killings years ago, which were covered up by the powerful people who ran Hope's Peak. He points her in the direction of Ida Lane, whose mother was a victim in 1985. Reclusive Ida possesses a paranormal ability to sense another's thoughts when touching them, and she and a skeptical Harper make an odd team as an increasingly reckless killer continues to strike.
