Gr 4-6-In these cartoon introductions to physics, primary color creatures that are meant to represent physical science forces or phenomena conduct readers on guided tours of their book's subject. For all the texts's brevity and the extremely basic visuals, the information conveyed in the comic-book-style panels is both broad and specific. Electricity, for example, explains how current and static electricity work, but also surveys bioelectricity, conductors and insulators, the history of electrical generation, and the benefits of cutting down on the use of energy at home. Gravity mentions Isaac Newton, inertia, solar system dynamics, and black holes. Despite much simplification-and no definition of metalloids or of plasma in either volume about matter-these titles are quick, clear first exposures to their subjects. (c) Copyright 2011.
