In Strangers Talk or Die, Jeff Parker comes to an agreement with Fat Sam Scoby, agent for the Skeleton Creek Cross-Bone rustling syndicate, to smuggle gold bars across the Mexican border. But once Parker is in Mexico, he arranges for the gold, now disguised, to be shipped to a man named Ed Bellows in an attempt to outsmart Scoby. In Cantrell, Tom Cantrell's attempt to rebuild the ranch he started with partner Steve Rogers culminates in a cattle drive across the Texas plains to the New Mexico Territory. The herd has been victim to persistent looting by Indians, his partner has been murdered, his partner's wife has sold her interest in the ranch to a mysterious lady, and the stolen cattle are ending up in the herd of Matthew Fallon. Someone doesn't want Cantrell to succeed.

Summary

In Strangers Talk or Die, Jeff Parker comes to an agreement with Fat Sam Scoby, a dishonest agent for a rustling syndicate. Parker agrees to smuggle gold bars across the Mexican border with the United States. He arranges for the gold bars, now disguised as railway freight, to be shipped to a man named Ed Bellows. When Parker does rendezvous with Scoby, he will not have the gold bars, and by this means saves himself from being killed by Scoby --; who intends to share with no one. Cantrell begins with Tom Cantrell's ill -fated cattle drive across the Texas plains to his home ranch in New Mexico Territory. The trail herd falls victim to persistent looting from bands of Indians, so that the herd dwindles to a ghost of what it once was. When his partner is killed, Tom learns that half interest in the ranch has been sold to Virginia Bratton. Taken together, the obstacles in Cantrell's path to build a successful cattle ranch appear insurmountable.

Strangers Talk of Die, a novelette, is bound in with the short novel, Cantrell, in this volume from T. T. Flynn, who died in 1978. He may be best known for The Man from Laramie, and, like that story, these two feature strong men righting personal wrongs. In Strangers, Jeff Parker has waited many years to avenge the death of his father and reclaim his ranch; he uses Mexican gold and naked greed to turn his enemies on themselves. In Cantrell, army veteran Thomas Cantrell is well on his way to establishing a Texas cattle empire when the plagues of Job descend. His partner is killed. Comanches steal or kill most of his herd on a drive to New Mexico, a near-lawless place where thieves, personified by a shark named Matthew Fallon, buy the purloined cattle for mere trinkets. To top it off, his partner's widow sells her share to a mysterious but certainly ambitious woman named Virginia Bratton. Sparks fly, but with or without Virginia, and despite Fallon, Cantrell will begin again his empire. Solid, traditional westerns.--Mort, John Copyright 2010 Booklist
