Just in time for Women's History Month, here are short, spirited profiles of twenty women who impacted life in America by speaking out against injustice and fighting for social improvements. The folksy, friendly narrative introduces such fascinating figures as Sojourner Truth, abolitionist preacher; Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War physician; Margaret Sanger, birth control pioneer; and Doris Haddock, a ninety-two-year-old champion of campaign-finance reform. The book spans over two hundred years of American history and includes time lines for such important social movements as abolition, woman suffrage, labor, and civil rights. Readers inspired by these fiery women can use the civil action tips and resources in the back of the book to do some of their own rabble-rousing.
Author Notes
Cheryl Harness "presents history as real people with real personalities rather than as dry, dusty textbook facts," according to ALA Booklist. She has written and illustrated many acclaimed historical picture books, including Ghosts of the Civil War, Remember the Ladies, and Three Young Pilgrims. Her days are filled with researching, writing, painting, and "gallivanting all over the country to see historic places and talk about picture books." She has ridden on parade floats for the Betsy-Tacy Society, and she likes to wear period costumes and play the harmonica at school appearances. She lives in Independence, Missouri (President Truman's hometown), with her Scottie and two cats

Gr 4-7-The focus here is on American feminists from the pre-Revolutionary War period to the present. Following in loose chronological order, the book opens with Ann Lee, the "Mother of the American Shakers" (1736-1784), and ends with government reformer Doris Haddock (born 1910). Each of the 20 profiles is handled uniformly over spreads packed with more information than is immediately apparent. About half of the women will be familiar to students. Some (Frances Wright, Mary Edwards Walker, Mary E. Lease) will be new. Each chapter has a portrait of the subject, a quote by that person, and important dates. Four time lines cover abolition, women's, labor, and civil rights movements. One poignant spread shows women carrying a banner that reads "August 18, 1920," the day women got the vote. Cartoon-style action shots illustrate the text, and colorful borders and adequate white space add to the appeal. Appended sections include places to visit as well as civil action tips. Kathleen Krull's amusing Lives of Extraordinary Women (Harcourt, 2000) includes both national and international figures. Women activists take center stage in Rabble Rousers: 20 Women Who Made a Difference by Cheryl Harness. The volume opens in 1776 with Ann Lee, founder of the first Shaker colony in Niskeyuna, N.Y. (near Albany), and closes with the ongoing story of 92-year-old Doris "Granny D" Haddock, who walked cross-country in 1999 in an effort to draw attention to the issue of campaign finance reform. The leaders are grouped within the abolitionist, women's, labor and civil rights movements. Readers will gobble up the wealth of information here. Beginning with Ann Lee, mother of the Shaker movement, and ending with Doris Haddock, fighting for campaign finance reform, Harness (The Revolutionary John Adams, p. 1693, etc.) sketches in words and pictures 20 women who "dared to try to change the world." She includes those one would hope are familiar to children-Eleanor Roosevelt, Sojourner Truth-but also includes several who are less well-known, like Mother Jones of the labor movement and Margaret Sanger. She also chronicles women who have almost vanished from historical consciousness: Frances Wright, who wrote a book about America in 1821 and fought for the education of slaves and against the legal fettering of women; or Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, an Army surgeon during the Civil War who is the only woman ever awarded the Medal of Honor (although Congress did try to take it away). Each woman's story is told in two facing pages, with a portrait, a quote, her dates, and some illustrations of her life's work. This makes the format accessible and attractive, but does mean that information has to be shoehorned in, and there is some awkwardness of style and phrasing. Harness also includes timelines of the abolition, women's, labor, and civil-rights movements, which give a quick overview of where these women's lives fit into context. She closes with extremely brief suggestions of resources, places to visit, and a ten-word glossary. Useful for school reports and for expanding the knowledge base of American women's history. Gr. 3^-6. This wonderful resource offers numerous opportunities for tie-ins with a unit on women's history and the middle-grade social studies curriculum in general. Twenty two-page biographies of familiar (Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt) and not-so-familiar (Ann Lee, Mary E. Lease) women are interspersed with time lines on the abolition, women's, labor, and civil rights movements. Harness writes with ease about her strong-willed subjects, and she has decorated her stories with a striking sepia-toned oval portrait of each woman, as well as highly detailed full-color scenes that reflect the time periods. Hoping to inspire young readers to take up a cause of their own, she ends the book with a section of civil action tips, provides addresses of such organizations as Kids Voting USA and Girls, Inc., which she defines as "a girl-empowering organization," and suggests four historic places children might want to visit. A glossary and a bibliography are appended. --Lauren Peterson
