School Library Journal Review
K-Gr 2-When Mom asks who is hungry, each family member, including the dog, enters the kitchen. The meal consists of beans, cheese, chile, tortillas, and a salad, and each dish is shown by itself on a white background. Everyone gathers around the table and expresses gratitude for such abundance. The colorful, average-quality illustrations depict the warmth and contentment of this family, and the simple text gives readers an opportunity to begin learning the basics of both languages.-Donna Atmur, Los Angeles Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Publisher's Weekly Review
PreS-K-A young girl describes a simple family scene in this bilingual picture book. She, her brother, sister, and grandmother are playing in the backyard when Mom calls them to the dinner table. Everyone comes in running, the family dog included. Mexican dishes are waiting: "a big pot of beans," "grated cheese and a bowl of chile," and "a stack of warm tortillas." Little sister Tina sees all the food on the table and gets excited. "We're rich, aren't we, Dad?" she asks. Dad looks at the faces around the table and all the food they have to share before he answers. "Yes," he says. "We're rich." It is clear that the members of the family appreciate all that they have; and while there is a lesson here, it is not overwhelming. The minimal text is straightforward, and the pleasing, colorful watercolors add to the sweetness of the story. A well-executed, fairly basic yet appealing story, this is recommended for all libraries with Spanish collections.Roxanne Landin, Fremont Area District Library, Fremont, MI (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. Simple sentences, first in English, then in Spanish, portray family experiences. Abuelita tucks in her grandchildren ("Shh, shh, the squirrels are sleeping") in Dreams, giving each child a comforting kiss. Eat portrays the family enjoying a traditional meal together, which makes them feel rich indeed. Clean, unfussy illustrations match the accessible tone of the stories. Booklist Review
In the bilingual My Family / Mi familia series, this family story combines lively double-page illustrations with simple sentences in English on the left page and Spanish on the right. A young girl tells how she, her younger brother and sister, Grandma, Dad, and Mom come together for dinner when Mom calls them to the table. The line-and-watercolor pictures show what they eat (beans, chilis, warm tortillas, salad) and explain how happy they are (We're rich / Somos ricos), all together. This will be popular with children speaking and learning both Spanish and English.--Rochman, Hazel Copyright 2008 Booklist
