Booklist Review

Despite the frosty setting, this is pure western, with an aged Logan pulling into a small town, the mysterious loner hoping to outrun his past. His past, naturally, catches up, looking for a showdown, and Wolverine scrambles to protect the innocent populace, even as his memories of an alternate time line play out, bringing readers up to speed on this corner of the Marvel universe. It may be spun out of Mark Millar's Old Man Logan (2010), soon to be adapted into a film, but Lemire's take is pure retro a loving homage to Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's seminal Wolverine (2009). Lemire brings his own game to the table, though, forging a distinctively articulate and somber superhero tale that refreshingly climaxes with a long, dark night of the soul that ends in an unaccustomed sense of peace. Sorrentino's magnificently bleak take on the material imbues the melancholy with an ever-encroaching darkness, peppered generously with razor-keen and particularly grisly death matches. Definitely connected to Lemire's Extraordinary X-Men series, this will still satisfy new readers with its essentially self-contained story.--Karp, Jesse Copyright 2017 Booklist
