*Starred Review* Priya has everything she could ever want . . . well, almost. She has a wonderful husband named Madhu, a master's degree, and a career at an advertising agency in the Silicon Valley. To fill her spare hours, she indulges her artistic craving by painting. Still, she has suffered several miscarriages and is unable to have the one thing she truly wants a child. It's not an easy decision to make, but Priya and Madhu decide to find a surrogate mother. Asha doesn't have much. She has a husband and two children, but they can barely feed them or keep a roof over their heads. For Asha, there is little question of renting out her womb, which is what she does when she checks herself into the House for Happy Mothers. Two women, both Indian yet both so different. Neither really understands what the other is going through until Priya decides to visit and be present for the birth. Malladi (The Mango Season, 2003) examines India's surrogacy industry with honesty and grace. This slice of life will touch all women who have struggled with conception and/or poverty. With their happy marriage, successful Silicon Valley careers, and wonderful home, thirtysomethings Priya and Madhu have it all, with one exception: Priya can't carry a baby to term. After multiple miscarriages and unsuccessful IVF attempts, the couple decide to hire a surrogate in India, a much cheaper option than hiring a surrogate in California. Pratab and Asha and their two children live in poverty in a tiny hut in a southern Indian village. After Pratab's sister-in-law becomes a surrogate and earns enough money for her family to purchase a flat, Pratab encourages Asha to become a surrogate so they can send their children to a better school. In her sixth novel, Malladi (The Mango Season) shines a spotlight on the controversial commercial surrogacy industry that currently faces new regulation by the Indian government. Narrator Deepa Samuel deftly handles the dueling perspectives of Priya and Asha; her compassionate reading clearly depicts the heartbreak of both women caught up in a morally complex situation.
