This is a book for adolescents who have contemplated suicide, or who may be at risk for doing so. As a teenager, author DeQuincy Lezine was one of the many young people each year who attempt suicide. Instead, he sought psychiatric help and went on to found the first ever campus-based chapter of the Suicide Prevention Action Network USA. In Eight Stories Up, Lezine discusses his own struggles with suicidal thoughts and provides valuable information that young people need, such as how to find professional help, what types of problems and illnesses may lead to suicidal behaviours, available therapies, and how to cope at home and at school.

In this powerful biography and guidebook, Lezine (now a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Rochester Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide) traces his path from suicidal experiences (in his teens through college and psychiatric hospitalization) to hope and recovery. He shares his early suicidal thinking, impulses, and resistance to help, and his fears and shame at being a "nut case" who was hospitalized. Demystifing treatment, medications, and steps toward recovery, the author discusses how therapy, medication, social support, and exercise can help; he also discusses ways of coping with negative thoughts and suicidal feelings. With the help of child and adolescent psychiatrist David Brent (University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine), Lezine offers the latest information on suicide prevention and tips on overcoming suicidal thoughts and feelings. In short, this book puts the complex, multifaceted problem of suicide into language and examples that everyone can understand and use. It should be in every high school and college library and on every therapist's shelf. Offering hope to suicidal youth, who typically feel that no one will understand their pain and who doubt that anyone cares enough to help, this book will inspire suicidal teens to seek help.
