Booklist Review
In this interactive picture book, the story opens with "ROAR!! goes the . . ." on the left-hand page, facing a die-cut hole revealing a tiger's head in profile. Viewers who guess "tiger" are in for a surprise. A turn of the page reveals the sentence's end: ". . . TRUCK that rumbles up the road." The tiger is its driver. Meanwhile, a crate falls off the truck, scattering tacks across the road. The phrase "HISS! goes the . . ." is accompanied by a die-cut window revealing a snake, while the sentence ends with ". . . CAR that gets a flat tire." The setup remains consistent, with misleading visual clues relating to sounds traditionally attributed to both vehicles and animals. Sure, snakes hiss, but so do cars that have run over tacks. Both geese and taxis honk. Double-page spreads featuring solid-color pages, few words, and die-cut holes alternate with two-page scenes featuring events on a busy street. The pairing works well, and Cushman's appealing, digitally colored pencil drawings offer plenty of action, details, and dressed-animal characters for kids to enjoy. Fun for reading aloud.
