It wasn't enough for Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (The Office; Extras) to torment Karl Pilkington on The Ricky Gervais Show-they sent him to see the Seven Wonders of the World for British Sky TV, camera crew in tow to capture his experiences, offbeat observations, and constant whining. The first of two series so far is quite a trip, delivering the captivating sights and sounds one expects, but Pilkington's cranky, deadpan commentary makes it a refreshing corrective to its highfalutin brethren. Here's a travel show brave enough to highlight humorously the disorienting effects of travel, local customs, unfamiliar foods, hostile animals, and inadequate sleeping conditions and toilets while "acknowledging" the significance and beauty of its subjects. Bonus features include deleted scenes, a preview episode, and a photo gallery. VERDICT The travel series for those who hate travel series, this program is credible and funny enough to satisfy fans of both travel documentaries and Gervais's and Merchant's work.
