He is the recipient of the Best Novel Edgar for The Chatham School Affair , the Martin Beck Award of the Swedish Academy of Detection, the Herodotus Prize for Best Historical Short Story, and the Barry for Best Novel for Red Leaves . His most recent novel was the critically acclaimed The Crime of Julian Wells . He splits his time between New York City and Cape Cod.

In this slow-burning, intricate thriller from Edgar-winner Cook (The Crime of Julian Wells), Sam Madison and his wife, Sandrine, both professors at Georgia's Coburn College (he of literature, she of history) and parents of a grown daughter, appear to have a solid marriage. But below the surface there are problems, which culminate in Sandrine's death from a cocktail of Demerol and vodka. While the coroner rules the death a suicide, the police suspect foul play and soon zero in on Sam as his wife's killer. The local prosecutor is so certain of Sam's guilt that he seeks the death penalty. In the course of the murder trial, which runs from unexpected revelations on the witness stand to torrents of legalese as the attorneys jockey for power, Sam reflects on his relationship with the brilliant, beautiful, and vexing Sandrine. Through Sam's memories, Cook pulls off the tricky task of rendering Sandrine-a lover of ancient history, particularly Cleopatra, and the intricacies of language-as vividly as if she had never died. A psychological courtroom thriller from Cook (The Crime of Julian Wells, 2012, etc.). Husband and wife Sam and Sandrine Madison are both professors at Coburn College in Georgia, but one evening, Sandrine dies from an overdose of pain medications and liquor. Is it suicide or murder? Sam's strange behavior leads to his arrest, and his subsequent murder trial forms the structure of the story, told in his own words. The couple had grown apart over the years because Sandrine saw Sam as becoming increasingly indifferent and disconnected from her. Even when he learns Sandrine has Lou Gehrig's disease and will surely die, he shows little sympathy or emotional support. He holds his town of Coburn in contempt and considers his students ignoramuses unworthy of his erudition. (Do these kids even know that "unique" doesn't take an adjective?) Sam's thoughts and speech are full of literary references that further separate him from ordinary people. If he ever gets around to writing the great book he vaguely plans, he won't write it in his office--he doesn't have one of those--but in his "scriptorium." So Sam is an easy man to dislike, both for the townspeople and the reader. Maybe Sandrine committed suicide, as Sam claims. Or maybe he murdered her to escape the increasing burdens of her care, as the prosecutor wants the jury to think. Day by day, the state builds its case while the defense tries to tear it down. Sam's own memories show Sandrine's increasing frustration and rage with him, while conversations with the defense attorney reveal more of Sam's personality than the defense dares allow the jury to know. Defense and prosecution are equally skilled and devoted to winning their cases, so the trial's outcome--and the truth--are not easy to predict. Master plotter Cook upends the traditional linear progress of the typical mystery from crime through solution (and sometimes) trial by starting this head-scratcher at the trial itself, with the opening argument of the prosecution. We sit with college professor Samuel Madison, on trial for murdering his wife, Sandrine, also a college professor, as he thinks about what has happened to him over the past week: for example, how the first responding officer on the scene seemed much more interested in what had happened than Samuel had expected; how the people in his tiny college town all seemed to have turned against him, assuming that such a socially graceless, homely man as he certainly would have killed his beautiful, faithless wife; and how excessively well prepared the prosecution seems to be. Part of the thrill of reading this unusual mystery is that we're confined to Samuel's head, and he's not saying if he did indeed murder his wife. A four-day blizzard has leftthe village of Three Pines looking like a toy town sheltered under a snow globe. But this secluded Canadian hamlet, tucked away in a valley deep in the mountains, contributes more than its picturesque setting to Louise Penny's latest mystery, HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN (Minotaur, $25.99). You might even say Three Pines is the hero of the novel. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec, the honorable detective in this series, often visits the village just to let its eccentric but kindhearted residents restore his faith in humanity. This time the inspector comes looking for something more - a safe haven. Demoralized and increasingly isolated, Gamache is battling an unscrupulous superior. "We've killed his career, his department. We've killed his credibility and broken his spirit," gloats one of the man's conspirators. But when the safety of two loyal friends is compromised by their undercover research into rampant police corruption, Gamache is able to spirit them away to Three Pines. "There remained pockets of Quebec where phones were still attached to the walls," we're told. Since Three Pines occupies one of these zones, where cellphones and laptops go dead, it's almost invisible in the deep darkness of the heavily forested mountains. But the only way to thwart the dastardly schemes (too dastardly for credibility) of that monstrous villain (too monstrous to be true) is to set up a satellite link to the outside world. How can Gamache ask dear friends like Myrna Landers, who owns the bookstore, and Gabri and Olivier, the gay couple who operate the B&B, to assist in the ruination of their village? Once met, the delightfully quirky inhabitants of Three Pines are the kind of people you can't wait to see again, and the characters Gamache imports from Montreal are peculiar enough to fit right in with the locals. But they all seem better suited to the modestly scaled subplot about the murder of a friend of Myrna's, the last of five world-famous sisters, much like the Dionne quintuplets, who became symbols of hope to a nation struggling to survive the Depression. Story over, a significant question remains: Will that satellite dish be coming down? Alex Connolly, the 10-year-old boy who shares narrative duties with his psychiatrist in Carolyn Jess-Cooke's startling novel, THE BOY WHO COULD SEE DEMONS (Delacorte, $26), is quite insistent on these points: he isn't crazy, he hasn't watched too many horror movies, and he doesn't have an imaginary friend. What he does have is a demon named Ruen, who appears to him in different guises, some more frightening than others, and who has lately been urging Alex to do "something very bad." Anya Molokova, the psychiatrist who tries to treat Alex at MacNeice House, a mental health facility for children in Belfast, suspects he has early-onset schizophrenia, the same disease that led to the death of her 12-year-old daughter. But before she can tackle Alex's demon, Anya must do battle with the boy's social worker, an advocate of a child protection plan called Signs of Safety who doesn't want to separate him from his suicidal mother. "Things are different in Northern Ireland," Jess-Cooke tells us, noting that children "who have never even seen a gun are experiencing psychological effects because of what the older generation has suffered." Looked at that way, it's a wonder that demons haven't taken over much of what we like to call the civilized world. Scroll back to 1998, the last time Charles Paris, the perennially down-on-his-luck character actor in a witty series of mysteries by Simon Brett, had a paying theater job. Despite his bad habits (he drinks a bit), Charles is quite a good actor. So it's cause for celebration when he lands respectable work in A DECENT INTERVAL (Crème de la Crime, $28.95) playing the ghost of Hamlet's father in a production designed to take place inside a giant skull.
