Tod Hanson, son of the legendary defense attorney Bomber Hanson, is not quite so pathetic these days. Working under his father still causes Tod extreme discomfort, but at least the girl he fell in love with in She Died for Her Sins0 (2002) is still in his life, even if it's become a long-distance relationship. But that leaves Tod to accept a case his father would rather pass on involving the death of Fred "Easy" Noggle, whose widowed wife, Melissa, a respected doctor, stands accused of the crime. Tod finds something believable in Melissa's story, even though all the physical evidence points to her. Tod's quirky investigative techniques uncover enough holes to turn Bomber around and accept the case after all. Though not warm and loving by any stretch of the imagination, the relationship between the pompous Bomber and his unassuming son grows closer with each entry into this engaging, witty series, which deserves a much larger audience. --Mary Frances Wilkens Copyright 2004 Booklist
