Shortly after midnight on May 2, 2011, two large helicopters swooped down on a home in Abbottabad, a small city in northern Pakistan. As the helicopters reached the ground, a group of American fighters spilled out. Soon, loud blasts filled the air as the commandos -all members of a group known as the Navy SEALs- blew apart walls and doors and shot their way in. The SEALs were looking for the world's most wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden. The secret raid was risky, but if anyone could carry out the mission successfully, it was the Navy SEALs. Members of this special operations force are among the best-trained fighters in the world. This magazine-like overview briefly chronicles the Al Qaeda leader's legacy of terror. The superficial narrative begins with the destruction of the Twin Towers in 2001 before moving on to the hunt for bin Laden and near hits and misses in Afghanistan. In the early morning of May 2, 2011, in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, the famous Navy SEALs completed perhaps their most publicized mission ever killing Osama bin Laden. This book begins with a perfunctory description of 9/11 to explain the motivation to eliminate bin Laden and also details bin Laden's actions before the attacks, along with his connections to al-Qaeda. Potentially unfamiliar terms are bolded and defined in a glossary, while place-names are all written phonetically to aid in pronunciation. Photographs of the tools used by the Navy SEALs in their tactical mission, including their weapons, are detailed in the appendix. Considering that the political and diplomatic issues at hand are quite complicated, this book may be best suited for kids with existing knowledge in the topic.
