School Library Journal Review
K-Gr 2-In this installment in the series, Hot Rod Hamster and his friends decide to rent ATVs and go on a dirty, muddy adventure. Along the way, they encounter an ATV stuck in the mud and help rescue the stuck vehicle. The illustrations are bright and engaging, with speech bubbles to help beginner readers distinguish dialogue from the flow of the story. The interactive question "Which would you choose?" appears on pages, allowing readers to decide which ATV, trail map, and tools to use to extract the stuck vehicle. Sentences are short and simple, and end in rhyming words to allowing new readers to anticipate what the next word might be. Hot Rod Hamster's dog expresses hesitance at the potential for a bumpy ride, but all the animals have fun and wear safety helmets offering a good example for readers. In the end, the passengers in the stuck ATV offer to share a picnic with their rescuers, who are now all covered in mud. VERDICT A funny and lighthearted read with a positive message about helping out and sharing.-Kaitlin Connors, Virginia Beach Public Library (c) Copyright 2015. Horn Book Review
A lively rhyming text relates Hot Rod Hamster's ATV adventure. As in previous titles, several choices are offered to the reader: "Bridge trail. Tree trail. Swamp trail. Sea trail. Which would you choose?" When a yelp for help reveals a friend-filled ATV stuck in the mud, the proper tool choice may save the day. Brightly colored, mud-splattered illustrations capture the all-terrain fun. (c) Copyright 2015. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
