Summary
Summary
Larger than life, the name Disney has become synonymous with brilliant animation and magnificent theme parks, but what about the man himself? In this collection of remembrances, more than 100 people recall the way their lives were touched by this remarkable man: animators who trained under him, directors inspired by his vision, actors who sought him out for advice and support, and family members who knew him best of all. Illustrated with rare photographs, this is an intimate portrait of Disney created by those closest to him.

Booklist Review
Disneyphiles, chow down! The bumper crop of books about your favorite purveyor of animation and sanitized history and the entertainment behemoth that bears his name is still coming in. First up--a serious but entertaining journalists' peek inside Disney's foray into social engineering, the planned city of Celebration, Florida. "Celebration aimed higher on the income scale" than had the prototypical planned burb. "Its residential housing was denser and its individual lots less parklike." With big porches on the limited number of Disney-approved house plans, the requirement that houses be close to the street to encourage neighborliness, and an unintended but marked tendency toward residents of the Caucasian persuasion, and it seems clear that Disney wanted to create a real-life analogue to its theme parks' Main Street, USA. Frantz and Collins, husband and wife, moved to Celebration to watch "the biggest experiment in social engineering since Levittown . . . unfold." Their reflections on life in a Disneyfied town will surprise those who think everything Disney is fake and those who believe everything Disney does is perfect. The perfection presumers may prefer the Greens' assemblage of snippets and snapshots. Reminiscences of Walt are organized into such chapters as "First Impressions," "Walt at Play," and "Fort Disney: The Strike and War Years." Contributing warm memories are, among others, Annette Funicello, various studio hands, a smattering of big-name actors and actresses, and the indispensable Cubby O'Brien. The Shermans knew Uncle Walt, too. In fact, they created dozens of songs for classic Disney movies, thereby contributing mightily to the overall Disney "feel." Walt's nephew Roy E. Disney says they have amassed a "striking scrapbook of memories." At any rate, it is jammed with stills, animation art, and reproductions of sheet music covers, all presented in the reliably lush Disney style--more enchanted fun than normal. --Mike Tribby
