Summary
From the 1830s onward, a succession of well-born Britons headed west to the great American wilderness to find adventure and fulfillment. They brought their dogs, sporting guns, valets, and all the attitudes and prejudices of their class. Prairie Fever explores why the West had such a strong romantic appeal for them at a time when their inherited wealth and passion for sport had no American equivalent.
In fascinating and often comic detail, the author shows how the British behaved--and what the fur traders, hunting guides, and ordinary Americans made of them--as they crossed the country to see the Indians, hunt buffalo, and eventually build cattle empires and buy up vast tracts of the West. But as British blue bloods became American landowners, they found themselves attacked and reviled as "land vultures" and accused of attempting a new colonization. In a final denouement, Congress moved against the foreigners and passed a law to stop them from buying land.

From the 1820s, stories like James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales enticed Britain's nobility to America's West. The first wave came to hunt bear and buffalo and helped document the demise of the wilderness they encountered. A second wave consisted of settlers in colonies that attempted to solve the problem of younger sons of noble families who had neither estates nor-because of political reforms in Britain-opportunities in the army or civil service. The final wave, seeking to profit from the cattle boom of the 1870s, provoked political backlash by acquiring huge ranches and using public lands for grazing. Pagnamenta (Sword and Blossom: A British Officer's Enduring Love for a Japanese Woman) provides a lively account of British adventurers, weaving in sardonic reminders of the dark side of aristocratic wealth. One man's Irish estates, for example, "had been a source of constant aggravation, ever since he evicted two hundred tenants to clear space for a new castle and park for himself." British social history meets American manifest destiny in Pagnamenta's successful recounting of "a long and improbable chapter" of the Victorian Age. 8 pages of b&w illus.; maps. For the most part, the nineteenth-century immigrant experience in America has been well documented. There is, however, one notable exception: the curious British invasion of the American West between 1830 and 1890. During these years, the lure of the prairie, the promise of adventure, the reality of affordable land, and the desire to establish civilized British niches on the rough-and-tumble frontier appealed to both younger sons of the aristocracy and members of the second-tier gentry looking to move up. What happened when the Old World met the New World on the wide-open spaces of the prairie is the subject of this fascinating social history. Mesmerized by the breadth and beauty of the untrammeled landscape and tempted by seemingly limitless opportunities, the Brits nevertheless considered themselves several cuts above their American cousins. Suspicious of their less-than-democratic airs, American settlers were often at odds with these land-hungry interlopers. IT is in names like Victoria, Rugby and Runnymede (a dinky little community long since buried beneath a sea of Kansas wheat) that modern travelers across the great plains of the Midwest can still catch a glimpse of the lost - and deeply weird - world that has been lovingly excavated and brought back to life in "Prairie Fever," by Peter Pagnamenta, a writer and documentary producer for the BBC. Back in the late 1880s, Runnymede was the spot where a group of English colonists decided to live out the fantasies they had read about in the exotic cowboy tales of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Known derisively as "remittance men" because of the comfortable allowances they regularly received from their daddies back home, these young toffs had been lured to Kansas by Francis Turnley, a wealthy Irish landowner's son from County Antrim who had gambled his future on the chance that a new railway line would lay its tracks straight through his personal fief: Runnymede. Turnley worked hard to recreate upon the prairie a perfectly pukka England. Runnymede offered not only polo matches, tennis tournaments and cricket, but a splendid opportunity for aspiring cowboys to don their buckskins and fire off six-shooters as they swaggered down Main Street. The new arrivals from England loved Runnymede. Established locals, especially the pious German-American settlers at nearby Harper, didn't think much of the antics of these grandee colonists. Yet all went well - until the Kansas Pacific Railroad line finally did come through, a fatal two miles away. With no transport link to the cities, the Runnymede project was literally train-wrecked. Poor Turnley and many of his chums slunk back home, none the wiser for their Midwest adventure, and certainly none the richer. But making their fortunes had not been a priority. After all, as one of these patrician Quixotes casually admitted, with all the blitheness of a rich man's son, "None of us had any financial sense." Runnymede's model had been a previous and equally unusual community. The Close brothers, sons of a wealthy London banker, had discovered their ambitions in 1876 when they were tempted by the Western agricultural displays at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. William Close, persuaded by an American businessman (whose daughter he conveniently married) that Iowa would offer the best territory for his American Oz, bought vast tracts of cheap farmland around the town of Le Mars, which soon became overlaid with cosily English place names like Gypsy Hill Farm and Carlton Farm. Le Mars itself was garnished with a sprinkling of English-style hotels and pubs (Albion House, the House of Lords). The punters arrived in droves, urged on by the zealous correspondent of that iiber-English magazine, The Field, an exuberant chap ever ready to gasp at the absolute Englishness of every last fence and yard he saw on his visit. Briefly unnerved by the shocking spectacle of a bronzed Lord Hobart out mowing a field, aided in such lowly labor by a pair of pinkfaced young aristocrats, he swiftly placed such drudgery within a soothing perspective. How "sensible and useful" the lives of these elegant noblemen must be, here in a town of "English ladies and English gentlemen, of English children and English babies." And what was more (in case any readers of The Field had missed the point), these gentlemanly households were tended by "English servants," nourished by "English cooking" and cared for - of course - with "thorough English neatness." Harbored in such a reassuring context, Lord Hobart's manly engagement with a mowing machine became, to the eyes of an admiring English reader, downright heroic. This delightfully absurd community (thwarted by a lack of Iowa foxes, the sporting colonists chased after prairie chickens) was also led to inexorable failure based on a fundamental miscalculation. The land around Le Mars proved as useless for fields of wheat as for pastureland. And as for tornadoes: definitely not one's cup of tea "English people can have no idea what storms are like out here," one of the forlorn young settlers wrote. "They are a regular terror." The Close brothers, shrewdly expanding into Kansas and Minnesota, accrued a fortune from their personal land investments. Their aristocratic followers fared less well. A few survived by moving into states like Wyoming (cheaper to ranch in and less subject to "these beastly storms"). The rest reverted to convention, returning home to less grueling lives. While such sagebrush sagas occupy the culminating chapters of "Prairie Fever," earlier episodes chart the adventures of a previous and more daring generation of Englishmen. Refugees from staid tradition, they were lured by the thought of virgin territory - America's magnificent scenery had been portrayed on vast canvas panoramas that were paraded around Europe for the wonderment of awed beholders - and above all, by the prospect of magnificent buffalo to hunt. These would-be woodsmen had devoured Natty Bumppo's fictional adventures among the Indians and trappers and longed to emulate them. Chief among the characters in these earlier chapters is William Drummond Stewart, a hooknosed military man whose odd appearance - he donned tartan trousers and a white leather jacket for journeys through the Rocky Mountains - became the hallmark of an indomitable eccentric. Stewart may not be the most admirable of the brave (or harebrained) sportsmen who trek through Pagnamenta's pages in search of all the splendid bison they can slaughter. He is, however, the most lively and eloquent in a remarkable gathering of men whose attitude was best summed up by a female traveler in the Rockies, Isabella Bird: "An American is nationally assumptive; an Englishman personally so." Miss Bird was putting the English down. Readers may, nevertheless, feel a sneaking admiration for Pagnamenta's crew of intrepid - if arguably somewhat inconsequential - gentlemen adventurers. English visitors lived out the fantasies they had read about in the cowboy tales of Wild Bill Hickok. Pagnamenta looks at the changing fascination the British aristocracy had with the US West throughout the 19th century. By the 1830s, the British elite were enthralled by books about American adventure, and several traveled to the West, where they hunted and lived among fur traders. After the Civil War, British elite created colonies in the West, such as the community of Runnymede, Kansas, where the aristocracy built a steeplechase course. But as Pagnamenta explains, by the 1880s, the British viewed the West as a place to get rich, and some established cattle ranches. Many Americans disliked the idea of foreigners controlling so much land. However, a severe winter killed millions of cattle on the northern plains, which forced many British ranchers to leave. The author reveals British aristocrats' reactions to US slavery, but fails to explain how this connects to his thesis. This is not a major problem, however, and in captivating style, Pagnamenta focuses on an aspect of the West about which most Americans are unaware. Summing Up: Recommended. Undergraduates and above. London-based historian Pagnamenta (co-author: Sword and Blossom: A British Officer's Enduring Love for a Japanese Woman, 2006) turns up an overlooked chapter in American history: the role of well-heeled Brits in Manifest Destiny. Beginning in the 1830s, and thence throughout the 19th century, the landed gentry and nobility of Britain were well represented on the American frontier. There was something about the place--the tall mountains, the indomitable Indians, all that wild game--that lured those men (and a few women) from across the pond. As Pagnamenta writes, not for nothing was Buffalo Bill's Wild West show so popular among the smart set in London, with Cody feted by Lord Randolph Churchill and other nobles. "When reports of all this reached the United States," he writes, "Buffalo Bill was criticized for his flunkyism,' and betraying his rough-diamond republican past, by so much hobnobbing with royalty, dukes, and earls." On American ground, well-born Britons followed Lord Byron and James Fenimore Cooper alike into the wild country. In many cases, these footloose explorers were younger sons in a time when, through primogeniture, the firstborn got the full inheritance, so their younger siblings really had nothing to lose. One such fellow was William Stewart, who, "naturally contrary, headed west for America," on the run from an unwanted wife and baby in Edinburgh. Others came for more exalted reasons, still others on a lark, still others by accident. Pagnamenta writes that one aristocrat happened upon some of his father's former Yorkshire-estate tenants, trudging their way along the Oregon Trail. "They were surprised to see him," he notes drily. So prevalent were these Britons in time, and so much land did they acquire, that in the later 19th century a movement arose to rid the U.S. of these "land vultures," with legislation proposed and passed to restrict land ownership to native-born Americans. The arguments, as Pagnamenta lays them out, are surprisingly similar to those mounted against Japanese investors in the 1980s and to immigrants legal and otherwise today, lending his story a timely quality. Pagnamenta (executive producer, BBC; Sword and Blossom: A British Officer's Enduring Love for a Japanese Woman) skillfully uses a wide assortment of archival materials to document and come to terms with the fascination, sometimes termed "Prairie Fever," that the American West held for British aristocrats. He demonstrates how England's wildly popular reception of Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show in 1887 was primed by decades of British adventurers, sportsmen, and cattle barons traveling to and writing about the romance of the American West. Starting with Captain William Stewart's journey to the Rocky Mountains in the 1830s, Pagnamenta paints many portraits of Britons participating in frontier life, ending with the abuses by British land investors who bought up checkerboard railroad land tracts and fenced off access to the internal tracts of public lands. VERDICT The book's biggest disappointment for scholars will be the decided lack of citations or reviews of recent work on the topic, from John I. Merritt's Baronets and Buffalo (1985) to Terry Abraham's Mountains So Sublime (2006). That said, this is a wonderful history based on bona fide 19th-century sources and is certainly appropriate for public libraries and sophisticated popular audiences.-Nathan E. Bender, Albany Cty.
