Booklist Review

This sequel to Sunset (2012), which introduced retired cop John Bekker (he's a private investigator now), should appeal to fans of hard-boiled crime fiction. Carly Simms, a state prosecutor and one of Bekker's close friends, is accused of murder. But Simms claims she's innocent, and the county sheriff believes her, despite the damning physical evidence. Who better to sort out this mess than Bekker, a former Special Crimes investigator? Bekker soon discovers that the victim is one of a handful of murdered men who came out of the same Utah orphanage, but that gets him no closer to the identity of the killer. Bekker is a bit of a familiar character: a tough former cop who's equally proficient with his wits or his fists. But the author has made Bekker his own man and not a copy of (say) Jack Reacher or Charlie Parker. "Cougar Killing" screams the headlines, after state prosecutor Carly Simms is found in bed next to the corpse of the much younger Jon Cecil Hughes. Sheriff Jane Morgan calls on former cop John Bekker for help, believing that Simms has been framed. Intrigued by the victim's bio-it turns out Hughes grew up in a Catholic orphanage in Utah-Bekker interviews Hughes's coworkers and friends. Something doesn't smell right here, especially when he learns that other young males-scattered across the country and from the same orphanage-have recently died in unusual ways. Meanwhile, Bekker uses his underworld connections to get the best possible legal counsel for Simms. Bekker's own dark past colors his actions, and his family isn't thrilled by his thirst for justice. VERDICT This thriller sequel (after the Edgar-nominated Sunset) moves at a blistering pace right from the start. Lamanda's brusque paladinlike protagonist is just the guy for readers who like a damaged hero struggling with family concerns. (c) Copyright 2013.
