She jumps at the opportunity to take a room on John Grant's ranch in Sawyer, Oklahoma, to begin a new career. She soon befriends Owen and Hannah Wallace, a brother and sister who have come from Colorado following the death of their mother. Abandoned at an early age by a father they never knew, they are set on revenge against the man who left them-a man they believe is John Grant. As the summer heats up and a brutal storm wreaks havoc on the town, a secret is revealed that threatens to change Charlotte's life-and her new friends-forever.

Author Notes

Dorothy Garlock is a Texas native living in Clear Lake, Iowa, who quit her job as a newspaper columnist and reporter at the age of 49 to write novels. She entered her first novel in a contest and lost, but she sold the book. Now, over twenty years later, she has millions of copies in print and has had her work translated into 18 languages.

So many of her more than 40 books are set in the Old West that Dorothy Garlock has come to be classified as a Western Romance writer. She is a member of the Romance Writers Hall of Fame. Popular titles include Almost Eden, The Listening Sky, and Larkspur. With Hope is a gritty, unsentimental romance set in the Great Depression.

Dorothy Garlock also writes under the names Dorothy Glenn, Dorothy Philips and Johanna Phillips.

Slow and bland, this historical romance set in 1939 Oklahoma features moments of high tension, such as a wildfire and a stampede, that somehow manage to seem unremarkable. The romance between school teacher Charlotte Tucker and mysterious cowboy Owen Williams is set against a background of Depression-era ranches and has all the ingredients for eliciting interest, but the hazy language and vague historical details make it seem as faded and devoid of taste as an old photograph of a forgotten dessert. A rancher vowing revenge on Charlotte's host and a pair of twins searching for their long-lost father similarly fail to add much to the book. Garlock must have been tired when she wrote this book, which is a disappointing addition to the canon of an author who's produced some of the best contemporary historical fiction around. The attraction between them is mutual, but Owen is on a deadly mission of his own, and he's not about to let anyone, not even Charlie, change his mind. Still, she has to try. VERDICT Anger, regret, and revenge are the driving forces in this action-packed story that in classic Garlock style brings 1939 rural Oklahoma to vivid life, gives readers a sweet pair of rewarding love stories, produces a villain or two, and dramatically dishes out justice.
