Charles Todd is a pen name for Charles and Caroline Todd, a mother and son writing team. Caroline received a BA in English literature and history and a Masters in international relations. Charles received a BA in communication studies with an emphasis on business management, and a culinary arts degree. They have written numerous novels including Bess Crawford Mystery series and the Inspector Ian Rutledge Mystery series.

Set in the summer of 1917, Todd's excellent second mystery featuring British nurse Bess Crawford (after 2009's A Duty to the Dead) smoothly blends realistic characters with an intricate plot. When Bess accompanies Lt. Meriwether Evanson, a severe burn victim, from the Continent to England, she's surprised to spot the pilot's supposedly devoted wife, Marjorie, crying on another man's shoulder at a train station. After returning to saving lives under German fire in France, Bess is stunned to read in a newspaper that Marjorie has been stabbed to death in London. Soon after, the depressed lieutenant commits suicide by cutting his own throat. Unable to resist involving herself in the murder investigation, Bess seeks to identify Marjorie's unknown companion, the possible killer. In addition to supplying a challenging puzzle, Todd (a mother-son writing team) does a superb job of capturing the feel of the battlefield and the emotional toll taken on those waiting back home for a loved one's return. In the second Bess Crawford novel (after A Duty to the Dead, 2009), the World War I battlefield nurse is escorting several injured soldiers back to England. Job done, Bess prepares to take a two-day leave, but, at the train station, she's startled to see the wife of one of her patients in a rather emotional situation with another man. Later, after Bess learns that Scotland Yard is very interested in locating the woman, she finds herself on the trail of a killer. Todd the pen name of a mother-and-son writing team turns in another winning performance with a smartly plotted, well-told mystery. The Crawford novels are a nice change of pace from the heavier Inspector Rutledge books, and fans of mysteries featuring strong, appealing heroines will certainly embrace this one. V.I. Warshawski, the hard-headed sleuth in Sara Paretsky's series of crime novels, isn't afraid of a little violence, so you can count on her to get into a few good brawls in BODY WORK (Putnam, $26.95). Just don't expect this pugnacious Chicago private eye, who proudly refers to herself as "a street fighter," to walk away from any display of violence, including her own, without examining its root causes. Take the terrific scene early on when V.I. goes to the trendy Club Gouge, where she catches the act of a performance artist who calls herself the Body Artist, inviting the audience to paint what they will on her naked flesh. ("I'm your canvas, your - bare - canvas.") When a female patron's elaborate rendering of a woman's face engulfed in flames provokes a tattooed man to hurl himself at the stage, V.I. senses that this display of rage is more than some dumb guy's drunken outburst. And the soundness of her instincts is confirmed a few weeks later when the same female patron is shot in an alley behind the club and the tattooed man, who is arrested for the murder, proves to be a shell-shocked veteran of the war in Iraq. Paretsky goes in for dense and weighty (not to say bloated) plots, and this one is no exception. Club Gouge is a hotbed of activity, some of it (like the drug dealing and money laundering) criminal, some of it (like the Body Artist's lesbian affairs and the girlish antics of V.I.'s cousin Petra, who works at the club) not. And much of it is uneasily integrated into the story. Still, Paretsky is careful and conscientious, always giving good value, and even her subplots are loaded with provocative ideas. For sheer political heft, the role played by private security contractors in the Gulf wars is the weightiest topic, sensitively embodied in the back story of that stressed-out vet. But the questions that linger are raised by the Body Artist's erotically charged act. Love it or loathe it as art - and even V.I. is uncertain about that - it throws fuel on the old but ever-burning issue of how society perceives the female body and how those perceptions can inspire both contempt for and violence toward women. The split focus of AN IMPARTIAL WITNESS (Morrow/HarperCollins, $24.99), the second book in a new series of World War I mysteries by the mother and son who write as Charles Todd, offers an unsettling vision of the two faces of war - the military horrors of the battlefield and the domestic anguish of the home front. Todd confers this Janus-like perspective on Bess Crawford, the courageous British nurse who serves as a sleuth in these remarkable stories.
